Torah / Haftarah Reading

קריאת התורה / ההפטרה

Learn the skill to open any page of Tanach and read correctly and with the cantillations!

When I was "prepared" for my bar-Mitzvah, I was given a tape of my Torah / haftarah portion and told to memorize it.  I learned my portion and no more.  I could not have read any portion from the rest of the year.  In fact, I wasn't really reading.  I just memorized it.

Most Chumashim print the text with the cantillations, the signs indicating the tune by which to read the words as well as the punctuation and placement of the accented syllable.

Incorrect reading of the punctuation and/or accent can change the meaning of the words and phrases!

When you open most Chumashim to the page that shows the "notes," or Cantillations, for reading the Torah and the Prophets, it looks like this:

Even if you know how to sing them all, it still comes out like a useless mess.

Years later, when I learned properly to read the Torah, my teacher had a different arrangement which looks like this:

Hear the singing of the notes for the:

This arrangement of cantillation phrases is according to how they actually appear in the verses.

For example, the סוף פסוק (line 4 in the top table) NEVER appears by itself and certainly not after a יתיב or a פסיק.  On the other hand, it ALWAYS appears in the pattern of line 7 in the bottom table (or a slight variation of it, as you'll learn).  The פסיק itself is not even a note rather than a silent pause as used in the first line of the first table, or line 2 of our arrangement.

The last line from the first table is omitted in the second table as those cantillations occur VERY infrequently and will be easily learned after mastering the art of Torah/Haftarah Reading.

Remember, our goal is to learn how to chant the cantillations correctly

- from ANY page of the Torah or Prophets -

rather than memorizing a specific portion.

In the classroom we spent just a few minutes each day on one or two lines until we mastered all of them.  Whether for the classroom or at home, you can learn the same way.
